Saker Cordless Hedge Trimmer Review: My Hands-on Experience

Over the past 4 years, I’ve been trimming the hedge in my home using a pair of shears. Although I never found the task particularly hard, it was cumbersome as heck. Worse, each time I used the tool, I woke up with crazy cramps in my forearm muscles the next morning.

After having enough of that, I decided to find a different, much easier way to trim my hedge. So, one morning in April 2025, I checked Amazon to see what hedge trimmers were available. The cordless ones made more sense to me due to their portability. I couldn’t imagine trimming a 50-meter-long hedge and having my movements limited by a power cord.

Comparing the various options on Amazon wasn’t easy. I had to factor in not just the features and reliability, but also the price. In the end, I settled on the Saker cordless hedge trimmer after getting sold on its impressive 4.3/5 average rating from over 2,000 buyer reviews.

Because Amazon doesn’t ship directly to Nigeria, a US-based friend helped me order the product. He had it delivered to his address, then passed it to another friend who was visiting Nigeria at the time. I received the product two weeks later.

This post is my hands-on review of the Saker cordless hedge trimmer. Keep reading to learn from my experience with it.

Unboxing and First Impressions

The product pack didn’t look any different from what I saw on Amazon, so its bulky looks didn’t surprise me. The whole thing weighed roughly 5kg when I placed it on my scale.

Removing the nylon and label revealed the plastic case, which feels quite strong. It’s secured with metal fasteners at both ends of the handle, making it easy to carry. I could immediately tell it would serve as a storage case for safely keeping the trimmer and its accessories.

After I eagerly opened up the pack, here’s what I saw…

The pack contained the following:

  • 1 instruction manual
  • 1 main device body
  • 1 hedge trimmer unit (with cutting blade and blade cover)
  • 1 grass shear unit (with cutting blade and blade cover)
  • 2 20V batteries
  • 1 charger

Seeing the grass shear unit in the pack reminded me that the tool also doubles as a grass shear. While I saw that on Amazon, I didn’t keep it in mind because I was more in need of the hedge trimmer.

So, this tool is both a hedge trimmer and grass shear. I’m not sure if I’d be needing the grass shear, but who knows?

Ease of Use

Having seen the pictures of the fully assembled tool on both the Amazon page and the product pack, I found it quite easy putting the parts together.

I simply held the head unit in one hand, fixed the hedge trimmer unit, slid the battery into its port, and pulled off the blade cover. And that was it! The hedge trimmer was ready for use.

Figuring out how to switch on the device was the only thing I couldn’t figure out at first. After pressing the button and observing that it just wouldn’t go all the way in, I checked the user manual for some help.

Then I found the ‘culprit’ was the safety lock-off key lying just in front of the handle. Its purpose was to prevent accidental switch-ons that could cause serious injury.

The tool started working as soon as I pushed the safety lock-off key forwards and pressed the power switch at the same time (I released the safety key afterwards, as I didn’t have to hold it down). This part might feel a bit clumsy for first-timers.

When the tool started working, I felt the vibration in my hand and saw the blade’s teeth oscillating rapidly back and forth. Time to go trimming!

Performance

The trimmer cut through my hedge with incredible ease. At first, I never expected the blades to cut through “thickened” branches, but the tool cut through those as well – although you might need to wait an extra 1-2 seconds to get those out of the way, depending on how thick they are.

And no, the tool won’t cut very thick branches (it’s not a saw, after all), but any branch that could get in between the blade’s teeth would get cut.

One thing I noticed was that the trimmer jammed and stopped working each time it encounters a thicker branch than it can handle. But whenever that happened, I simply switched it off, pulled it out, switched it on again, and continued the task while preventing those ‘problem’ branches.

Aside from the occasional jams caused by the very thick branches, the tool worked smoothly, cutting through the hedge in a way similar to how a clipper cuts through hair. But for really massive hedges, the blade’s length might feel quite inadequate.

Here’s what I got after my ‘test’ trimming task.

For objective comparison, I should have taken a picture of this section of my hedge before starting the trimming, but I forgot. But then, just picture a hedge with an uneven height of roughly 1.5x of what’s in the photo above. That should give you a rough picture of how well the trimmer performed. To me, it’s a good job. Never mind that the hedge isn’t perfectly sculpted—it was my first time using the tool.

After the ‘test’ trimming task, I popped out the trimmer unit and replaced it with the shearing unit. I tested it with some weeds around my home, and it worked well, though its shorter profile limits how much grass it can cut at once. I didn’t take time on this because I wasn’t really interested in the shearing part.

In sum, this isn’t the most powerful hedge trimmer you’d find, but it gets the job done as long as your hedge isn’t a forest of some sort.

Comfort and handling

The whole setup was surprisingly lighter than I expected. And more importantly, it felt quite easy to carry. I tested the angle adjustment button at the ‘neck’ of the head unit, and it worked perfectly — allowing a 45% range of head movement.

At first, I felt quite uncomfortable holding down the switch for extended periods. But I figured my mistake, I’d been holding the tool with just one hand. But after I held it with both hands (as recommended based on pictures I saw online), the discomfort practically disappeared.

The next morning, I felt only a slight cramp on one side of my right forearm due to how I mistakenly handled the tool with one hand initially. I didn’t feel any such pain after subsequent uses of the tool.

Battery Life and Charging

Well, I’ve never had to exhaust a battery in a single session because my trimming sessions are usually short (15-20 minutes). But each time I start with a fully charged battery, I end up with the battery still showing all 3 green indicators, implying that the battery is still well-charged.

A battery can last up to five hours with continuous use, according to one buyer review. But I’m yet to push the battery to its limits at my end.

The battery takes 2 hours to get fully charged after being drained completely, according to the manufacturer. I’m yet to verify this claim, as I’ve not drained a battery completely.

One thing I love about the battery is the charge level indicator. A single tap on the small red ‘power’ button lights up the indicator, which shows you how much charge is left in the battery. The indicator has 3 dots, but the number of dots that light up would depend on how much the battery is drained.

What I Liked Most

  • Nice protective casing
  • Lightweight
  • Smooth and easy trimming
  • Long-lasting battery

What Could be Better

  • There should be a way to keep the tool working continuously without having to hold down the button (maybe such was absent for a reason, though).

Saker Cordless Hedge Trimmer Review: Verdict

The Saker cordless hedge trimmer may not be the most powerful option out there. But for a tool made for small to moderate-sized hedges and shrubs, it performs reliably for its intended purpose.

With its ease of use, smooth operation, and long-lasting battery, the Saker hedge trimmer and grass shear is worth buying.
